ALBUM REVIEW: Flavour – Ijele (The Traveler)

Flavour dropping another studio album has to be one of those many few things about the industry that makes one trip. Let’s state the facts; Flavour is majorly a high life artiste, who only started to enjoy a relationship with the afro popular genre of music not too long ago. Now, high life on the other hand is one helluva sweet music genre enjoyed by all but not particularly celebrated by sundry because of its classification in ethnicity. However, Flavour has succeeded in expanding frontiers, thereby pushing set limits to becoming arguably the biggest Africa-wide international act peddling his gospel of Igbo high life on global ends. Flavour has also released to very positive, critical and commercial acclaim, four studio albums in the high life genre – you should note that the only people who succeeded in doing this, are legends like Chief Steven Osita Osadebe, Oliver De Coque and those order of iconic greats in Igbo high life music who also garnered a befitting reception abroad. So in like manner, Flavour is here, still here; kicking it, and kicking it real good – especially in an industry like ours that puts a span on the lifeline an artiste can live within his frame of fame.

flavour

Ijele – The Traveler is the fifth in the series of Flavour’s studio LPs, and while I cannot relate the sounds or themes explored on the album with the title, I have to point out that Flavour will never default on coming out tops simply because he never negates the value of effort in his work. His sound may be basic (which is not even entirely true), his style may have become stereotype (now this part is 100 percent truth) but he’s using the expressions of both to keep his fans and listeners always reeled in and totally entertained. Now that, is pretty much the summary of his latest album. Ijele – The Traveler, is a gift of appreciation purely for the purpose of entertainment. Flavour’s relationship with dance can’t ever be extrapolated. The two measure like a simile. No matter the situation, whether he is appreciating a woman’s beauty like on the Tekno-produced ‘Catch You’, expressing emotional fondness or his sense of (be)longing like on ‘Iheneme’ with Chidinma, unashamedly tripping and lusting after as in the tracks ‘Baby Na Yoka’ and ‘Ukwu Nwata’, paying worthy tribute like on ‘Nnekata’ and ‘Chimamanda’, or showing activism on a song like ‘Oppressor’, Flavour’s formula for dance never fails to apply.

ALBUM REVIEW: Skales – The Never Say Never Guy

For many who are akin with the music scene in Nigeria, yes, Skales gets away with the title of this album, ‘The Never Say Never Guy,” which purely is based on his sole promise to do music, keep making music and do nothing other than music. He has paid his dues and thus, gets whatever minute fame this album brings him.

skales

Perhaps, due to the over the board attention and somewhat support millions of fans across the globe have given to artistes when they what they assume is pouring out their soul, or talking about their humble beginning, Skales, decided a brilliant move for his sophomore album; tread this route. Doing this, added with what can only be tagged pity and not respect from clueless folks out there, he further strained the little credibility built over his over a decade in the industry by employing the likes of Nigerian born-US based singer, Rotimi, PJ Morton, Wande Coal, Tekno, Burnaboy and a host of others on his 19-track album to impart some sheer dopeness for him.

His anxiety about acceptability, his career and many other unresolved issues unknowingly embedded  in the over an hour long album, which of course was brought to fore with the his sheer knack for mediocre lyrics, unsynchronized rhythm, an entire nation featured and every other obvious flaws taken in as ‘my style’, merely played out like he was having a bit of identity crisis, on the album…safe to say this work of art, playlist or album as he recently called the NEVER SAY NEVER GUY, lacks direction, theme and all together the visible yet unreachable success we all hoped and prayed for, for him.

THANK GOD

Skales basically went to church for this thanking God for the grace upon his life with such lame lyrics all in a bid to rhyme, but again.. we thank God. One question though, if you had not seen your face on a billboard, means you wouldn’t have believed there infact is really a God up there? The Caribbean tune on this was dope though, it got many swaying left to right.

MAMA

This song basically took me back to Lil Kesh’s ISHE….all together the song just baring a different artiste and beat.

GBEFUN

Nit much was actually expected on lyrics, but this song does have the potential of becoming a successful track, should it get the level of promotion needed to push it further.

BOOTY LANGUAGE

The hook o the song had me at the word go… and probably the only thing that did it for me on the record. Nice track though, could work at a dimly lit clubhouse or a party.

LOKE LOKE

Skales’ need to have this song on this project, has me wondering how he does come to making really important decision in life generally. Not worth anyone’s time.

MAKE LOVE IN THE MORNING

Wande’s comfort zone, still was not having any fun, probably reason he felt no need to do more…understandable as the record itself lacks everything necessary to make a love song, a love song.

KPETE WICKED, FOR YOU, KO MA GBON

Decent songs, but his need to follow suit in using words which lack any comprehensive meaning further proves he is scared of coming into his own.

SPEAK MY MIND FT TIMAYA

Dear Skales, you won’t be getting a ‘Preach on brother’ here as it seems that’s what you are aiming for. We know this, every other artiste have said this in either interviews or their songs, so how about something new or basically just have Timaya do this track all by himself.

LET ME LOVE YOU FT PHYNO

Beautiful song..both artistes did come through on this love song.

FEEL GOOD FT PJ MORTON

Something about this song could have really worked but I couldn’t see past the fact that Skales sems to be either desperate for approval or is just so scared of promoting the African sound. PJ morton of course brought the Maroon 5 vibe truth be told, I thought he was going to start the record by singing ‘Don’t wanna know’. Decent track, beautiful production, but it wouldn’t have hurt if Sales had gotten the worth of his money and even some sort of buzz for having a Maroon 5 member sing on an AFRICAN beat.

LAVISH FT ROTIMI

Same mistake on FEEL GOD. For crying out loud, Rotimi is Nigerian, need I say more. Also, Skales, you speaking Yoruba, is of no use here..even Rotimi speaking like A Nigerian worked better than you a full blown Nigerian, living and working here trying to sound foreign  isn’t that just silly?

GALLANT FT LIL KESH

A sure bulletproof melody…love this track.

JOGODO

This track has no business being on this album. A messy, lame and altogether dead on arrival Yemi Alade kinda track.

THAT SHHH FT FIFI COOPER AND EGAR BOI

It sounded like the producer suffered an epileptic attack during production…the beat sounded distorted and unfinished all at the same time.

GIVE ME LOVE FT TEKNO

Skales did Tekno a favour here by taking the lead in singing cringe worthy lyrics, but again, no competition whatsoever as far as his album is concerned.

Through the 19 tracks heaped on this project, THE NEVER SAY NEVER GUY , failed to impress even with him flirting with array of styles and personas. He never sounded anything less than comfortable in his own skin/world, even as his managed to swerve completely off the theme of the project I mean, THE NEVER SAY NEVER GUY, someone who has been through it all and still standing, right? So why the need to fill the project with booty clapping, badly told love stories and its like on the album?

I would love an answer to this, anyone who has one, should please let me know in the comment section.

How Janet Jackson Is Spending the Holidays and Co-Parenting With Ex Wissam Al Mana (Exclusive)

Looks like Janet Jackson is making sure this year’s holiday season is one to remember!

ET has learned that the singer will be spending Thanksgiving with the entire Jackson clan in California, and that it’s the first time in five years that she’s been able to celebrate the holidays with her famous family. A source close to the Jackson family tells ET that since it’s also her son, Eissa’s, very first Christmas, the 51-year-old superstar is pulling out all the stops. According to our source, Jackson is planning a very special celebration for Eissa, who will be a year old in January.

Meanwhile, the source says Jackson is continuing to co-parent with her estranged husband, Wissam Al Mana, but that there’s no hope for reconciliation between the two.

“All Janet wants to do is move forward and be the best mother to her son and to be happy,” the source says.

Jackson is nearing the end of her State of the World tour, with the final stop being on Dec. 17 in Atlanta, Georgia. Once the tour ends, our source says the singer will take some much deserved time off, though she is undecided if she wants to go back to London, where she was previously based with Al Mana. Our source says that her brother, Randy Jackson — who’s been by her side during the tour — is now in London taking care of legal and business issues for her. Before her tour started, Jackson and Al Mana appeared in a London court in June for divorce proceedings.

“She’s not quite sure if she will be going back to London because she calls California home, and baby Eissa has gotten used to the warm weather,” our source says.

And while her tour may be ending, Jackson won’t be slacking on eating healthy and exercising, our source also notes.

“She has gotten great reviews and a really positive response from her fans and the public about her appearance and her amazing weight loss,” the source shares. “Janet still continues to eat clean and juice, and will continue her regime even after the tour ends. She loves the way she looks now and has turned the clock back.”

Last month, Jackson reunited with her former backup dancer, Jenna Dewan Tatum, onstage during her concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Game Of Thrones: Actress Ellie Kendrick drops season eight clanger about character Meera

Actress Ellie Kendrick – who plays Meera Reed in Game Of Thrones – has revealed she is still unsure of whether she will return for the eighth and final season of the hit HBO show.

Speaking to Metro, she has admitted she is still ‘waiting for the phone to ring’ when it comes to finding out if she is to be involved.

By default, this looks to have squashed one of the show’s biggest fan theories – that Meera is the twin of longstanding character Jon Snow [played by Kit Harington].

For a while, it’s been widely speculated that Jon Snow has a variety of misplaced siblings.

One theory believes he is related to Daenerys Targaryen [Emilia Clarke] while another believes he and Meera are actually twins.

But with Ellie, 27, apparently in the dark about her character’s fate, it would seem Meera is in fact a disposable character – and might not feature in season eight at all.

‘I wait for the phone to ring and then I find out, but it hasn’t rung so I don’t know,’ she said. ‘I’ll find out whether I am or not at some point, but for now I haven’t been notified so I’m yet to discover.’

As the cast have already been assembled for an initial read-through, this could likely be a sign that Meera won’t be back at all.

Her character was involved in the plot of the three-eyed-raven, alongside Bran Stark [Isaac Hempsted Wright], which came to a head in season six; and Ellie doubts Meera and Bran will ever cross paths again on the show.

‘It was a sad day to say farewell to young Isaac – not so young now and also very tall – on a personal level, because we had a little gan which dwindled further and further as the seasons went on,’ she said.

Ellie had previously dismissed this story, however, speaking back in 2016 on the Game Of Thrones panel at London film and comic con.

She said at the time: ‘I think [the theory is] just because we both have curly hair man, because if you’ve read the books they’re not really that similar.’

However, this didn’t necessarily mean much to salacious fans, who are fully aware that the TV show has overtaken the plot in the novels, and HBO’s writer’s have take the story in a direction of their own.

Whether Ellie receives that phone call is yet to be deciphered.

AZEALIA BANKS APOLOGIZES TO LIL KIM

It’s finally over

A strange thing has been happening in the knotty, tangled world of Azealia Banks recently. The rapper — who has never met an open-ended feud she didn’t like (until even that relationship sours) — has started tying up loose ends.

Banks is apologizing more and more, and at the same time, some of her wilder stories are being validated in the press. Where before we saw a neverending stream of beef and anger, we’re now we see something like sense.

Banks’ version of events in that infamous Russell Crowe story turned out to be true, she ended her seemingly eternal spat with Nicki Minaj, and now she’s apologized for lighting up Lil Kim on Twitter all the way back in 2012.

Is it opposite day (year?) or something?
